NOTE: This is a good example for us.

Matthew 12:31f "Every sin and ____BLASPHEMY___________ will be ____FORGIVEN___________ men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will _____NOT______ be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a ______SPEAKS_____ against the Son of Man[kind] will be forgiven, but anyone who _________SPEAKS____________ against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

NOTE: Jesus here refers to his human side, "son of mankind" and indicates that people seeing him could possibly misunderstand. But the Holy Spirit is a different matter. By the power of the Holy Spirit Jesus performed miracles. Even though Jesus looked like any other man, his miracles proved he had power from God.

What does the Spirit do (John 16:8a, pg. 1047)? ______________________________________________ Therefore, as long people refuse to acknowledge God and his will for their lives, it is impossible to forgive them.

Matthew 22:43 He [Jesus] said to them, "How is it then that _____DAVID_________, speaking by the Spirit, calls him Lord?"

NOTE: As we shall see later, having the Holy Spirit and having the gift of the Holy Spirit are different. We shall find out what the gift is.

Luke 1:35 The angel answered, "The Holy Spirt will come _____UPON________ you, and the ______POWER________ of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God."

NOTE: The Holy Spirit is God's POWER!

NOTE: The word translated "power" is from the Greek word "dunamis" which is also translated "mighty works" and "miracles." Apparently it was at this time that Jesus obtained the ability to work miracles.

Luke 4:16-18 He [Jesus] went to Nazareth...went into the synagogue....The prophet Isaiah...."The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has _______ANOINTED________________ me to...proclaim ____FREEDOM_______ for prisoners, recovery of ________SIGHT_____________________ for the ____BLIND___________.

NOTE: One of the first things Jesus did was to announce to the people that he now had miraculous power. He had worked only two miracles before this: Turning water to wine, which some could say was a setup; and healing a Roman official's son by long distance.

Luke 7:12, 15 As he [Jesus] approached the town gate, a _____DEAD__________ person was being carried out....The dead man sat up and began to ______TALK__________, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.

Do modern faith-healers raise the dead? ________________________

Luke 9:54-55 When the disciples, James and John saw this, they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call ____FIRE_______ down from heaven to ________DESTROY_________ them?" But Jesus turned and rebuked them, [see footnote "c" for rest of verse] and he said, "You do ______NOT_______ _______KNOW________ what

______KIND____________________ of spirit you are of, for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives, but to __________SAVE_________________ them.

NOTE: Early in a person's Christian life, they may not understand the kind of life the Holy Spirit wants them to live through his word, the Bible.

Luke 10:21 At that time Jesus, full of _______JOY______________ through the Holy Spirit, said, "I ___PRAISE______ you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth....for this was your good _____PLEASURE_______________."

NOTE: Jesus is excited because the 72 he'd sent out to preach just prior to his death had worked miracles in defiance of the demons and of Satan himself. He knew he'd be leaving the kingdom in good hands.

Luke 11:13 "If you then, though you are evil, know how to give ____GOOD_______ ________GIFTS_________ to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who __ASK___ him!"

How does God know we love him (John 14:15, 31)? __________________________________________ Will smiling and singing hymns prove we love him? _________________

John 1:32f (pg. 1028) Then John gave this testimony: "I ____SAW___________ the Spirit come down from

NOTE: Since the Holy Spirit REMAINED, this seems to indicate that whatever they saw representing the Holy Spirit was absorbed into Jesus at this time.

John 3:5f Jesus answered, "I tell you the _______TRUTH______________, no one can enter the ____KINGDOM____ of God ________UNLESS____________ he is _____BORN____________ of ________WATER______ and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives ________BIRTH________ to ____SPIRIT______."

John 3:7f "You should not be surprised at my saying, you must be born ________AGAIN____________. The

_____________WIND________________ blows wherever it pleases. You ____HEAR______________ its sound, but you cannot tell _________WHERE____________ it comes from or ______WHERE______ it is going. So it is with ___________EVERYONE________________ _____BORN_____________________ of the Spirit."

NOTE: Even though the Spirit was seen in some form when Jesus was baptized, it was just to prove there was a Spirit. We today know we have the Spirit by the way we obey God as he commands in his Word.

John 3:34f "For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without ____________LIMIT______________. The Father loves the Son and has placed

_____________EVERYTHING________________ in his hands.

If someone acts very holy and says how much they love God but does not speak the words of God, even after being shown, are they trying to impress you or God? _____________________ Has God really sent them? _________________________ Would you consider them harmless? _______________________

NOTE: The KJV after "Spirit without limit," added "unto the Son" (italicized) because the verse before and the verse after both refer to Jesus, the Son.

John 4:23-24 Yet a time is coming and has _____NOW__________ come when the _____TRUE_______ worshipers will worship the Father in spirit AND ______TRUTH____________, for they are the _____KIND____________ of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers _______MUST____________ worship in spirit AND in __________TRUTH_______________.

Is it important to God that we worship the way he specifies? _____________

By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who ___________BELIEVED______________ in him were ____________LATER________________ to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had _____NOT______________ been given, since Jesus had not yet been ______________GLORIFIED_______.

Had the Twelve received the Holy Spirit yet? ____________

John 11:33 When Jesus saw her weeping [over dead Lazarus], and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was ____________DEEPLY___________________ moved in spirit and _________TROUBLED_________.

NOTE: The word translated "moved" in the NIV is translated "groaned" in the KJV. This word is from the Greek word "embri-mao-mai" which is an intensive anger like the snorting of horses. Jesus was angry at dead. And he was about to do something about it. With the power of the Holy Spirit, he and Death had it out, and the Holy Spirit won!

John 11:39, 44 "But, Lord," said Martha, the sister of the ______DEAD__ man, "by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there [in grave] _____FOUR_______________ _________DAYS___________....The dead man came out.

Do modern faith-healers ever go to cemeteries to raise the dead? _____________

John 13:21 After he had said this, Jesus was ____TROUBLED___________ in spirit and testified [told future], "I tell you the ________TRUTH______________, one of you is ______GOING___ to betray me."

John 14:15f "If you _______LOVE______________ me, you will ________OBEY______________ what I

When we worship, are we doing what pleases our friends or God?

John 14:17 "....the Spirit of ________TRUTH____________. The world cannot accept him."

NOTE: The Holy Spirit will also give them the gift of performing miracles.

John 16:7 "Unless I go ______AWAY____________, the Counselor will not come to you...."

NOTE: For some reason, it seems two of the Trinity are always in heaven, possibly because it takes more to fight Satan and his demons directly than here on earth. We have the smaller of the battles being raged in the universe.

John 16:8a "When he comes, he will ___________CONVICT___________ the world of _____GUILT__________...."

Therefore, when someone reads the Bible and sees ways they are worshipping or acting in their private life that are wrong, but are not convicted that they are guilty of anything, do they have the Holy Spirit? ____

NOTE: The Holy Spirit is a person - "he."

John 20:20ff After he [Jesus] said this, he showed them his ______HANDS_______________ and ________SIDE______. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. Again Jesus said, "______PEACE______________ be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." And with that he ______BREATHED_________ on them and said, "___________RECEIVE____________________ the Holy Spirit. If you _____FORGIVE___ anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are ___NOT______ forgiven."

NOTE: This was a special gift only the apostles received. Jesus was repeating what he had said earlier in Matthew 16:19 and 18:18 (pg. 951).

NOTE: The word "spirit" is also translated "breath."

Acts 1:1f ...all that Jesus began to do and to _________TEACH_____ until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving ______INSTRUCTIONS_________ through the Holy Spirit to the ________APOSTLES_________ he had chosen.

NOTE: Although Jesus was the Words of God (John 1:1, 14), these words come about from the thoughts and motives of God, God's Spirit.

NOTE: The word translated "received" is sometimes translated "accepted" or "caught" and is translated 122 times as "took." He now had once again the Holy Spirit without his fleshly body and temptations interfering.

When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of ________JESUS___ would not ______ALLOW_____________ them to. So they passed by Mysia and went down to ____TROAS_.

Was Paul, to whom the Holy Spirit influenced where to preach, a common Christian or an apostle (Romans 1:1, pg. 1090)? _____________________________

Acts 19:2-7 "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you __________BELIEVED______________?" They answered, "No, we have not even _____________HEARD_______ that there is a Holy Spirit." So Paul asked, "Then what baptism did you receive?" "John's baptism," they replied. Paul said, "John's baptism was a baptism of __________________REPENTEANCE_____________...." On hearing this, they were _____BAPTIZED______ into the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul placed his ___HANDS__________ on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in ________TONGUES_____________ [languages] and prophesied. There wre about 12 men in all.

NOTE: A similar incident had happened earlier with people who had been baptized only in the name of Jesus, in which case, the apostles gave them the Holy Spirit. But in this case, they had not been baptized in the name of Jesus because they apparently didn't even know Jesus had come, in addition to knowing there was a Holy Spirit. Because of their confusion, Paul baptized them first, then gave them the Holy Spirit next so they would see for themselves there was a Holy Spirit.

Why would they need the ability to speak in languages and prophesy both? Remember what speaking in languages was for (1 Corinthians 14:22, pg. 1115)? ____________________________________________ Was it a convincing sign to these twelve men? __________________ Now they can use the sign for others.

NOTE: Since the gift of languages was used to spread the basic gospel message (Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection), their gift of prophecy would be used to expand on God's Word not yet written.

Acts 20:17, 28 From Miletus, Paul sent to Ephesus for the elders of the church....Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers [bishops]. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.

How were elders selected through the Holy Spirit (1 Timothy 3:1-7)? ____________________________

Then Paul answered, "Why are you weeping and ____________BREAKING_____________________ my heart?....When he would not be dissuaded, we gave up and said, "The Lord's ____WILL__________________ be done."

NOTE: Although the Holy Spirit can warn us of things, it does not necessarily mean we should avoid them.

NOTE: Whenever the word "Spirit" stands alone as it did in verse 4, the Greek does not specify that it is man's spirit or God's spirit. The translator must decide from the context. In this case, I tend to think they were pleading with Paul with their whole spirit, their whole being, to not go to Jerusalem.

Acts 23:9 "We find nothing wrong with this man," they said. "What if a spirit or an _______ANGEL_____________ has ______SPOKEN_____________ to him?"

NOTE: The word translated "power" is from the Greek word "dunamis" which is also translated "mighty works" and "miracles." Apparently it was at this time that Jesus obtained the ability to work miracles.

NOTE: Just as Jesus was the Word of God (John 1:1, 14), the Holy Spirit is the Thoughts and Power of God.

This is what we speak, not in words taught us by ______HUMAN____________________ wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual _________TRUTHS________________ in spiritual ___WORDS______________.

Do you see here how the Thoughts of God (Holy Spirit) and Words of God (Jesus) work together for us?

1 Corinthians 2:14ff The man ________WITHOUT___________ the Spirit does not _____ACCEPT_______________ the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are ____FOOLISHNESS______________to him, and he cannot ________UNDERSTAND_______________________ them, because they are spiritually discerned...."For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?" But we have the _____MIND_____________ of Christ....Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as __WORLDLY__.

1 Corinthians 3:16f Don't you know that you yourselves are God's _________TEMPLE______________ and that God's Spirit ___LIVES_________________ in you? If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for God's temple is _________SACRED__________________, and you are that temple.

Therefore, what types of things should we let our bodies do? ___________________________________

1 Corinthians 6:9-11 Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? NOTE: The word translated "justified" comes from a Greek word meaning to pronounce innocent, to acquit.

1 Corinthians 6:16ff Do you not know that he who _______________UNITES_______ himself with a ____PROSTITUTE______ is one with her in body? For it is said, "The two will become one flesh." But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with him in ______SPIRIT_______________....Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are _______OUTSIDE______________ the body. Do you not know that your ________BODY________________ is a _________TEMPLE_____________ of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a ______PRICE____. Therefore honor God with your body.

And what a price we were bought for. What was it (Revelation 5:9, pg. 1195)? _____________________

1 Corinthians 7:39f A woman is bound to her ______HUSBAND___________ as long as he ______LIVES_________. But if her husband dies, she is _______FREE_______________ to marry anyone she wishes, but he ______MUST__________ belong to the Lord. In my _____JUDGMENT________________, she is happier if she stays as she is - and I ______THINK________ that I too have the Spirit of God.

NOTE: In this case, Paul is giving a personal opinion. Whenever he did this, he so stated. He gave his opinion in 1 Corinthians 7:25 and 11:1-16, and so stated (see KJV).

1 Corinthians 9:11, 18 If we have sown spiritual __SEED__ among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you?...What then is my reward? Just this: that in preaching the gospel I may offer it free of charge, and so not make use of my rights in preaching it.

1 Corinthians 10:3-5 They [wandering Jews] all ate the same spiritual __FOOD__, and drank the same spiritual __DRINK__; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their __BODIES__ were scattered over the desert.

1 Corinthians 12:1 Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ________IGNORANT_______________.

Even though the church in Corinth had spiritual gifts, they were still having problems with what? ______________________________________________

1 Corinthians 12:3 Therefore I tell you that no one who is ______SPEAKING_____________ by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be _____CURSED____," and no one can say, "Jesus is _______LORD_________," except by the Holy Spirit.

However, when people say it, do they/we always mean it? Is Jesus Lord of our life? Jesus stipulated over and over that what is the prove of our making him Lord (John 14:15)? ___________________________

NOTE: The word translated "prophecy" is from a Greek word meaning to speak the mind and counsel of God.

NOTE: The word translated "interpretation" means an explanation, not just transposing a word from one language to another. It is the same word translated "explained" in Luke 24:27 (pg. 1025) when Jesus met the men on the way to Emmaus after his resurrection.

How can we interpret the scriptures today in order to help others? (Hint: The scriptures always interpret themselves.) ______________________________________________________________________________

1 Corinthians 12:11 All these are the work of one and the ____SAME_________ Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as _______HE________ ___________DETERMINES______________________.

NOTE: Paul is saying that love will never stop. But prophecying God's will, speaking in foreign languages, knowing the mind of God will all stop.

Why would prophecy be superior to all other spiritual gifts (v. 3)? ________________________________

1 Corinthians 15:42-46 So will it be with the resurrection of the __DEAD__. The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual.

2 Corinthians 1:22 (pg. 1119) [God] set his ____SEAL____________________ of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a _____DEPOSIT__________________________, guaranteeing what is to come.

NOTE: The comments in Revelation 9:4 (pg. 1197) about having the seal on our forehead is just changing a noun (name of something) into a verb (an action).

When we purchase a house but need to go to the bank to borrow the money, what do we do to get a guarantee that we can have the house once we get our loan? ____________________________________

2 Corinthians 3:3 You should know that you are a ____LETTER_________________ from Christ, the result of our ministry, ___WRITTEN____________________ not with ____INK________________ but with the Spirit of the living God, not on _________TABLETS______________ of stone but on tablets of human ____HEARTS________.

NOTE: Having the Holy Spirit is not just a feeling. It is an action.

2 Corinthians 3:6 He has made us _____COMPETENT______________________ as ministers of a ____NEW___ covenant -not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter _____KILLS_____, but the Spirit gives ___LIFE_________.

NOTE: According to Galatians 3:10f (pg. 1129), unless we keep all 600 of the laws of the Old Testament perfectly, we are cursed/condemned. It only takes one sin to be a sinner.

2 Corinthians 3:7f Now if the minister (O.T. Law) that brought death, which was engraved in letters on ____STONE_______, came with ________GLORY___________ so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the __FACE__ of Moses because of its glory, facing though it was, will not the minister of the Spirit (N.T.) be even more glorious?

NOTE: Exodus 34:29 (pg. 89) says that, after God gave Moses the O.T. Law on Mount Sinai, when he came down his face was so radiant people could not look at him. So he had to put a veil on.

NOTE: Paul was writing this to explain his excitement over telling the Gospel to people everywhere he went.

2 Corinthians 3:16ff But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is _____________FREEDOM__________. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's _________GLORY__________, are being _____TRANSFORMED_________ into his _______LIKENESS___________ with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

Although light is a symbol of the glory of God, what is God's actual glory (Exodus 33:19, pg. 88)? _____________________________________________

2 Corinthians 5:2ff Meanwhile we groan, longing to be _____CLOTHED____________________ with our heavenly __DWELLING__....so that what is _______MORTAL____________________ may be swallowed up by ______LIFE_______. 2 Corinthians 12:1-2 I will go on to __VISIONS__ and __REVELATIONS__ from the Lord. I know a man in Christ who 14 years ago was __CAUGHT__ up to the third heaven. Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know - God knows.

2 Corinthians 12:12 The things that ________MARK____________ an ________APOSTLE___________________ - __SIGNS___, ____WONDERS____________ and _________MIRACLES____________.

What mark the apostles? __________________________________________________________________ Therefore, when the apostles died, could these gifts be passed on? __________

2 Corinthians 13:14 May the ___GRACE______________ of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the __________LOVE_______ of God, and the ________FELLOWSHIP_______ of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Here's the Trinity. What magnificent qualities.

Galatians 3:1f (pg. 1129) You ______FOOLISH__________ Galatians! Who has _________BEWITCHED__________ you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was _____CLEARLY______________ portrayed as crucified. I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the ___LAW_____, or by _______BELIEVING________________ what you heard?

The letter to the Galatians was written because people were saying they should keep both Jewish and Christian practices. Think about some of the recent innovations in our worship services. Are we tending to do the same things today? _________________________________

Galatians 3:3 Are you so _________FOOLISH__________? After _________BEGINNING_________ with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human _______EFFORT____________?

Do we have a tendency to fool ourselves into believing we're saved just because we perform certain duties at the church building and show up for all the programs? _________________ How about things that we do that look so "holy"? ____________ Is our worship helping to keep us saved or keeping us off course? _____________________________________________________

Galatians 3:5 Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you because you ______OBSERVE___ the law, or because you ________BELIEVE_____________ what you _______HEARD_______________?

Romans 10:1f (pg. 1098) Paul wanted the Israelites/Jews to be saved. They were very religious, but their zeal was not based on _______________________________________.

Romans 10:17 Faith comes from hearing/reading what? ______________________________________

Galatians 3:14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the _____GENTILES________ through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might ____RECEIVE___________ the _____PROMISE__________ of the Spirit.

What was promised to Abraham (Hebrews 11:8, 10, pg. 1169)? _________________________________

Galatians 4:4ff But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under ___LAW________, to ________REDEEM________________ those under law, that we might receive the full _______RIGHTS_____ of sons. Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his ______SON__________ into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, "Abba [Daddy], Father." Do people sometimes insist we do certain things that look holy in order to prove we're daughters of God? _______________________________________ Are they - and are they trying to get us to be - slaves to this "holy" behavior? _______________________________________

Galatians 4:29 At that time the son born in the ordinary way _____PERSECUTED________________ the son born by the power of the Spirit. It is the ______SAME __________ now. But what does the Scripture say? "Get rid of the ______________SLAVE__________ woman and her son, for the slave woman's son will __NEVER___ share in the _______________INHERITANCE________ with the free woman's son."

NOTE: Paul had recalled how Abraham had one son by his wife's slave while he was able to (Ishmael), and another son, Isaac, by his wife when he was 100 years old and not able to. Abraham always considered his second son by his wife, Isaac, to be his legal heir. Ishamael's descendants became Arabs. Isaac's descendants became Jews. They never have and never will get along. Even in Paul's day the Jews (descendants of Isaac by the flesh) were persecuting the Christians (descendants of Isaac spiritually because they followed Abraham's examples of faith with the aid of the Holy Spirit).

When we try to break away from worship programs that are copies of the Old Testament, do people tend to treat us well? __________________________________________

Galatians 5:5ff But by faith we eagerly await through the Spirit the ________RIGHTEOUSNESS_________ for which we _____HOPE_______. Who cut in on you and kept you from ____OBEYING_________ the ___TRUTH__? "A little _____YEAST_________ works through the whole batch of dough"....The one who is ____THROWING____ you into ______CONFUSION_______ will pay the _______PENALTY_______.

Paul was angry at those who insisted these new Christians worship like they did. Should we be angry today if it happens? (Hint: See Ephesians 4:26, pg. 1135) _____________________

Galatians 5:16 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not ___GRATIFY_______________________ the desires of the sinful __________NATURE__________________.

Are some worship services merely a gratifying of our sinful natures? _____________________________

Galatians 5:17f For the sinful nature desires what is __________CONTRARY____________ to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is _________CONTRARY_______________ to the sinful nature. They are in ______CONFLICT___________ with each other, so that you do _______NOT______________ do what you ___________WANT_________.

Ephesians 1:13 (pg. 1131) And you also were ________INCLUDED___________ in Christ when you heard the word of ________TRUTH____________, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were __MARKED______ in him with a ____________SEAL_______________, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a ____DEPOSIT___ guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession - to the praise of his glory.

Revelation 9:4 (pg. 1197) talks about having a seal on our foreheads so we can be saved. That seal (a noun/name) is explained here as a verb/action. What is the seal/being sealed? _____________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________

Ephesians 1:17 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of ____________WISDOM____________ and ________REVELATION_______________________.

NOTE: Paul's letter to the Ephesians is deep and exciting. These were mature Christians. 1 Timothy 1:3 says that Timothy was there a long time. Since John was exiled to the island Patmos when he wrote Revelation, and it is off the coast of Ephesus, many believe John lived there too. If John did, he may have taken Mary, Jesus' mother with him if she were still alive. Paul was praying for this mature congregation to receive the gift of revelation.

Ephesians 2:13, 18 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were _____FAR______ away have been brought ___NEAR________ through the _________BLOOD___________ of Christ....For through him we both have ____ACCESS______ to the Father by one Spirit.

NOTE: Both Christ Jesus and we Christians are near to God the Father through God the Spirit.

Ephesians 2:21f In him [Jesus] the whole ______BUILDING_________________ is joined together and rises to become a holy ____________TEMPLE____________ to the Lord. And in him you too are being built ___TOGETHER_____ to become a ___________DWELLING____________ in which God _____LIVES___________ by his spirit.

Ephesians 3:4ff In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the _______MYSTERY_____________ of Christ, which was not made known to men in other ________GENERATIONS_________________ as it has _____NOW________________ been revealed by the Spirit to God's holy apostles and porphets. This mystery is that through the ________GOSPEL_________________ the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the __________PROMISE_________ in Christ Jesus.

So, if anyone asks you what the "mystery" is so often mentioned in the New Testament, what is it? ______________________________________________________________________________________

In fact, the church exists to explain it to principalities and powers in heavenly places (3:10). We Christians have more influence than we realize.

Ephesians 3:16 I pray that out of his glorious _______RICHES________________ he may _______STRENGTHEN______ you with power through his Spirit in your ______INNER____________ being.

Ephesians 4:3 Make every ____EFFORT_________ to keep the _______UNITY__________ of the Spirit through the bond of ______________PEACE_________.

Is it your opinion that churches have more unity by adding more and more activities to their worship or keeping it simple? ______________________________________________________________________

Ephesians 4:4ff There is one ________BODY________________ and one _________SPIRIT__________ - just as you were called to one __________HOPE__________ when you were called - one _______LORD___________, one ____________FAITH______________, one ___________BAPTISM_____________; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

NOTE: the entire Trinity is represented here.

If there is only one baptism, describe it. _____________________________________________________ Therefore, what baptisms have been eliminated? _____________________________________________

Ephesians 4:30 And do not ______GRIEVE__________________ the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were _______SEALED___________________ for the day of _____REDEMPTION___________________.

In the list of negative traits listed in verse 31 and 5:3-5, which one(s) are you struggling to overcome? ______________________________________________________________________________________

In the list of positive traits listed in verse 32 and 5:9, which one(s) are you struggling to have in your life? ______________________________________________________________________________________

Ephesians 5:18f Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the _________SPIRIT______________________. __SPEAK__ to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. __SING__ and make music in your __HEART__ to the Lord.

How do we fight against Satan? ___________________________________________________________

Ephesians 6:18 And pray in the Spirit on ___ALL_______ occasions with all kinds of prayers and ____REQUESTS_______. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the ________SAINTS____________.

If praying in the Spirit means praying in "unknown tongues" would it be sinful to pray in a language people know? _________________________________

Philippians 1:17-21 (pg. 1138) "...while I am in chains....for I know that through your _______PRAYERS_______ and the _____HELP______ given by the Spirit of Jesus Christ, what has happened to me will turn out for my ______________DELIVERANCE__________....whether by life or by ______DEATH_____________. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is _________GAIN___________."

The word translated "deliverance" is also translated "salvation." If Paul had been left in jail for good, how could it lead to his salvation? ______________________________________________________________

Philippians 2:1 If you have any encouragement from being ____UNITED____________ with Christ, if any ___COMFORT__ from his love, if any _____________FELLOWSHIP___________ with his Spirit, if any ____TENDERNESS___ and compassion."

How are we united with Christ (Romans 6:4, pg. 1094)? _______________________________________

Philippians 3:3 For it is we who are the circumcision [Jews], we who _______WORSHIP_________ by the Spirit of God, who __________GLORY____________ in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the ___FLESH______.

The Jews kept following Paul around telling the new Christians that, to be saved, they needed to keep Jewish rites. What are some things people are saying we must do in our worship or alone to make sure we are saved? ______________________________________________________________________________

Colossians 1:8 (pg. 1142) ...who also told us of your ________LOVE_______ in the Spirit.

Colossians 1:9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with te knowledge of his will through all spiritual __WISDOM__ and understanding.

Colossians 3:16 Let the __WORD__ of Christ __DWELL__ in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all __WISDOM__, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your __HEARTS__ to God.

Remember, the word translated power is from the Greek word sometimes translated miracles.

How can the Holy Spirit give joy when we hear the message of Jesus? __________________________

1 Thessalonians 4:8 Therefore, he who _________REJECTS_____________ this instruction does not reject _____MAN______ but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.

2 Thessalonians 2:8f (pg. 1149) And then the __________LAWLESS______________ ____________ONE____ will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will ___________OVERTHROW____________________ with the ______BREATH________ [Spirit] of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming. If someone claims to work miracles, does that mean this person is saved? _____________________

NOTE: Indeed, how blessed. Not only did the prophets not understand, the angels don't either.

NOTE: People denying Christ's divinity abounded in the first century. It abounds today too. North America is the last stronghold for Christianity in the entire world. Even in Europe only about 10% of the people attend church.

1 John 4:6 We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we _____________RECOGNIZE__________ the Spirit of _________TRUTH_______ and the spirit of _________________FALSEHOOD_________.

Where do we find the truth (John 17:17, pg. 1048)? ________________________

1 John 4:13f We ___________KNOW________ that we believe in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have ________SEEN______________ and ___________TESTIFY________ that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.

NOTE: John, the apostle, had seen Jesus for himself, both before his death and after. He was convinced.

And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth....The Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement.

John made a point of the water and blood that came out of Jesus' body at his death in John 19:34-35, pg. 1051: "Instead, one of the soldiers __________________________ Jesus' side with a spear, bringing a sudden _____________________ of ________________________ and _________________________. The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is ____________________.

Jude 15-19 (pg. 1189) To judge everyone, and to __CONVICT__ all the ungodly of all the ungodly acts they have done in the ungodly way, and of all the harsh __WORDS__ ungodly sinners have spoken against him. These men are __GRUMBLERS__ and __FAULTFINDERS__; they follow their own evil desires; they __BOAST__ about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage...."In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their __OWN__ ungodly desires." These are the men who ___________DIVIDE________ you, who follow mere natural _________INSTINCTS__________________ and do not have the Spirit.

When people tell us they have the Lord's Supper only quarterly or yearly because it would lose its meaning otherwise, are they following the Bible or their instincts (see Acts 20:7, pg. 1079)? _________________

Jude 20 But you, dear friends, _______BUILD______________ yourselves up in your most holy faith and ___PRAY______________ in the Holy Spirit.

How do we pray in the Holy Spirit? See Romans 8:26 (pg. 1097) and John 14:17 (pg. 1046). _________

Look at the footnote. What could be the other translation for "seven spirits"? ______________________

NOTE: Seven is symbolic. Three (the Trinity/heavenly) + Four (earthly, as in four corners of world, four winds) = Everywhere. The Spirit of God coming out of his throne is everywhere.

Revelation 1:10 On the _____________LORD'S__________ ________DAY____________________ I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet.

What was the one significant day of the week for Christians (see Matthew 28:1 (pg. 966)? ___________ ____________________________________________________________________

NOTE: Here was John, probably in his 90s now. He is the last apostle still alive. He had been with Jesus in his youth. How he longed to be with him again. Will death never come? Then, suddenly he gets his wish and doesn't even have to die to do so. At last! He sees his Jesus again! At last! The old friends are united once more!

Revelation 2:7,11,17,29 He who has an ear, let him _____________HEAR____________ what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes....

Revelation 3:1 These are the ________WORDS___ of him who holds the seven spirits (seven-fold Spirit) of God.

Revelation 4:2 At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a ________THRONE___________ in heaven with someone sitting on it.

NOTE: Wow! Now he is seeing the throne of God shared with Jesus. At last he sees Jesus in his splendor! At last! At last!

Revelation 4:5 From the throne came flashes of _________LIGHTNING_________, rumblings and peals of ____THUNDER_____. Before the throne, seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven Spirits of God.

Revelation 5:6 Then I saw a _____LAMB___________, looking as if it had been slain, standing in the center of the ______THRONE__________, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. He had __SEVEN____ horns and ___SEVEN_____ eyes, which are the seven ______SPIRITS_________ of God sent out into all the earth.

NOTE: Horns indicated strength to the Jews. Eyes indicated all knowledge.

NOTE: How it must have grieved John to see Jesus standing them once more dripping with blood. It was because of John's sins, my sins, your sins that he had to go through that terrible death.

Revelation 14:13 Then I heard a voice from heaven say, "Write: Blessed are the _______DEAD________ who die in the Lord from now on." "Yes," says the Spirit, "they will ___REST__________ from their ____LABOR_________, for their ________DEEDS_________ will follow them."

NOTE: John was old and tired. He wanted to die and be with Jesus. He is assured that all he has done for Jesus has not gone unnoticed.

Revelation 17:3 Then the angel carried me away in the Spirit into a ______DESERT________. There I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was covered with blasphemous names and had seven heads and ten horns.

NOTE: John, knowing he will die himself soon, must warn the Christians to keep trying and keep trying and never give up. Satan is strong. We must fight the good fight until our last day on earth.

Revelation 19:10 At this I fell at his feet to worship him. But he [the angel] said to me, "Do ___NOT______ do it! I am a fellow ______SERVANT_______________ with you and with your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship______GOD_________! For the testimony of Jesus it the spirit of prophecy."

Even if his old age, John sometimes got things wrong. If we are not to bow down to angels, are we to bow down to any other religious figure? ___________

In a sense, we all have the gift of prophecy by testifying what Jesus has done for us and will do for them: Save them.

Revelation 21:10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the ____HOLY_________ _______CITY_____________, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.

At last! At last! A view of his eternal home! "I'll be there soon!" John must have shouted. "I'll be there soon!"

Yet, although he cannot see it, John is already in his holy city. Revelation 21:2 and Ephesians 5:25, 32 (pg. 1136) says who is the holy city? ______________________________________________

Revelation 22:17 The Spirit and the _________BRIDE_____ say, "Come!" And let him who hears say, "Come!" Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the _____FREE_________ gift of the water of ________LIFE___________.

Who is the bride (Ephesians 5:28f, pg. 1136)? __________________

The doomsday prophets of today do not frighten us. The sooner Jesus comes, the better. For any of us, it may be tomorrow, for tomorrow we may die. Do we fear it? No! Come, Lord Jesus! Come!

And how does Jesus reply (Revelation 22:20)? _______________________________________________

Old Testament References

Genesis 1:1-2 (Pg. 1) In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was __FORMLESS__ and __EMPTY__, __DARKNESS__ was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was __HOVERING__ over the waters.

Genesis 6:3-6 Then the Lord said, "My Spirit will not __CONTEND__ with man forever, for he is mortal [corrupt]; his days will be a hundred and twenty years"....The Lord saw how great man's __WICKEDNESS__ on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil __ALL__ the time. The Lord was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain.

NOTE: This is not talking about the number of years before God destroyed the world with the flood. That was 100 years later, for Noah was 500 years old at this time (5:32, and entered the ark when he was 600 years old (7:6). This was talking about the reduced average age from nearly 1000 years old to just over 100 years old. (This is a separate and fascinating study.)

Genesis 41:38f So Pharaoh asked them, "Can we find anyone like this man [Joseph], one in whom is the spirit of __GOD__?" Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one so discerning and wise as you."

Exodus 28:3 (Pg. 81) Tell all the __SKILLED__ men to whom I have given [the spirit of-KJV] wisdom in such matters that they are to make garments for Aaron for his consecration, so he may serve me as [high] priest.

Exodus 31:3 And I have __FILLED__ him with the Spirit of God, with __SKILL__, __ABILITY__, and __KNOWLEDGE__ in all kinds of __CRAFTS__.

Exodus 35:30f "See, the Lord has __CHOSEN__ Bezalel son of Uri....and he has __FILLED__him with the Spirit of God, with __SKILL__, __ABILITY__ and __KNOWLEDGE__ in all kinds of __CRAFTS__.

Number 11:16f (Pg. 141) The Lord said to Moses: "Bring me __SEVENTY__ of Israel's __ELDERS__ who are known to you as leaders and officials among the people. Have them come to the Tent of Meeting, that they may stand there with you. I will come __DOWN__ and __SPEAK__ with you there, and I will take of the Spirit that is on you and put the Spirit on them. They will __HELP__ you carry the __BURDEN__ of the people so that you will not have to carry it alone."

NOTE: This seventy eventually became known as the Sanhedrin or Council.

Numbers 11:25 Then the Lord came down in the __CLOUD__ and __SPOKE__ with him [Moses], and he took of the Spirit that was on him [Moses] and put the Spirit on the seventy elders. When the Spirit __RESTED__ on them, they __PROPHESIED__, but they did not do so again. [The ancient Hebrew is unclear here and may be "and continued to do so."]

NOTE: The word translated "rested" is from the Hebrew word "nuach" and is also translated lie down, be at rest.

NOTE: The word translated "prophesied" is from the Hebrew word "naba" and means to abundantly utter or pour out.

Numbers 11:26ff However, two men...had remained in the camp. They were listed among the __ELDERS__, but did not go out to the Tent [Tabernacle]. Yet the Spirit __ALSO__ rested on them, and they prophesied in the camp...."Moses, my lord, stop them!" But Moses replied, "Are you __JEALOUS__ for my sake? I wish that all the Lord's people were prophets and that the Lord would put his Spirit on them!"

Numbers 16:19 When Korah had gathered all his followers in __OPPOSITION__ to them at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting [Tabernacle] the __GLORY__ of the Lord __APPEARED__ to the entire __ASSEMBLY__....

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, "Separate yourselves from this assembly so I can put an end to them at once." Moses and Aaron fell facedown and cried out, "O God, God of the spirits of all __MANKIND__, will you be angry with the entire assembly when only one man sins."

Numbers 24:1f, 13f Now when Balaam [a pagan] saw that it pleased the Lord to __BLESS__ Israel, he did not resort to __SORCERY__ as at other times, but turned his face toward the desert....the Spirit of God came upon him and he uttered this oracle...."I could not do anything of my own accord, good or bad, to go beyond the command of the Lord - and I must say __ONLY__ what the Lord says."

Numbers 27:16ff May the Lord, the God of the spirits of all mankind, appoint a man over this community to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them....So the Lord said to Moses, "Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him....He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring of the Urim before the Lord.

Deuteronomy 34:9 (Pg. 206) Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the Spirit of __WISDOM__ because Moses had laid his hands on him. So the Israelites __LISTENED__ to him and did what the Lord had __COMMANDED__ Moses....Since then, no __PROPHET__ has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face, who did all those miraculous __SIGNS__ and wonders the Lord sent him to do in Egypt - to Pharaoh and to all his officials and to his whole land. Judges 3:9f (Pg. 234) But when they [Israelites] cried out to the Lord [from 8-year slavery], he raised up for them a __DELIVERER__, Othniel....The Spirit of the Lord came upon him, so that he became Israel's __judge__ and went to war [against pagans God had warned for centuries].

Judges 6:34ff Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet, summoning the [Israelite clan] to follow him....Gideon said to God, "If you will save Israel by my hand as you have __PROMISED__...."

Judges 11:1, 29 Jephthah the Gileadite was a __MIGHTY__ warrior. His father was Gilead; his mother was a prostitute....The the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah. He crossed Gilead....and from there he advanced against the Ammonites [pagans God had warned for centuries].

Judges 13:2, 24f A certain man...had a wife who was __STERILE__ and remained childless....The woman gave birth to a boy and named him __SAMSON__. He grew and the Lord blessed him, and the Spirit of the Lord began to __stir__ him [KJV: "move him at times"].

NOTE: The word translated "stir/move" is from the Hebrews "paam" meaning to disturb or trouble.

Judges 14:6 The Spirit of the Lord came upon him in __POWER__ so that he tore the __LION__ apart with his bare hands as he might have torn a young goat.

Judges 14:19 Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon him in __POWER__. He went down to Ashkelon, struck down __THIRTY__ of their men, stripped them of their belongings and gave their clothes to those who had explained the riddle. Burning with __ANGER__, he went up to his father's house.

Judges 15:14f As he approached Lehi, the Philistines came toward him shouting. The Spirit of the Lord came upon him in __POWER__. The __ROPES__ on his arms became like charred flax, and the bindings __DROPPED__ from his hands. Finding a fresh jawbone of a donkey, he grabbed it and struck down a thousand men.

1 Samuel 10:1, 5ff Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on Saul's head and kissed him, saying, "Has not the Lord __ANOINTED__ you __LEADER__ [king] over his inheritance....You will meet a procession of __PROPHETS__ coming down from the high place [altar in the hills] with lyres, tambourines, flutes and harps being placed before them, and they will be prophesying. The Spirit of the Lord will come upon you in __POWER__, and you will prophesy with them; and you will be __CHANGED__ into a __DIFFERENT__ person. Once these __SIGNS__ are fulfilled, do whatever your hand finds to do, for God is with you."

The word translated "changed" is from the Hebrew word "haphak" meaning to be overturned. It is used where Moses' staff turned into a snake and Moses turned the waters of the Nile into blood (Exodus 7:7 and 17); also leprosy turning the skin white (Leviticus 13:17) and various friends becoming enemies of someone.

The word translated "person" is from the Hebrew word "ish" meaning individual, as opposed to "mankind."

1 Samuel 11:1, 6 Nahash the Ammonite went up and besieged Jabesh Gilead....When [King] Saul heard their words, the Spirit of God came upon him in __POWER__ and he burned with __ANGER__.

1 Samuel 16:13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and __ANOINTED__ him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came upon David in __POWER__.

1 Samuel 16:14 Now the Spirit of the Lord had __DEPARTED__ from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord __TORMENTED__ him.

The word translated "evil" is from the Hebrew word "ra" and also means sore or troubled.

1 Samuel 16:15 Saul's attendants said to him, "See, an evil spirit from God is __TORMENTING__ you."

The word translated "tormenting" is from the Hebrew word "baath" and means to frighten or terrify.

NOTE: Having made God his enemy, Saul was now afraid of the One he had formerly loved. 1 John says "Perfect love casts out fear" but Saul no longer loved God. Resentment and fear is all that is left when love is gone.

1 Samuel 16:16, 23 "Let our lord [King Saul] command his servants here to search for someone who can play the __HARP__. He will play when the evil spirit from God comes upon you, and you will feel better"....Whenever the spirit from God came upon Saul, David would take his harp and play. Then __RELIEF__ would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him.

1 Samuel 18:9-12 And from that time on Saul kept a __JEALOUS__ eye on David. The next day an evil spirit from God came __FORCEFULLY__ upon Saul. He was __PROPHESYING__ in his house, while David was playing the harp, as he usually did. Saul had a spear in his hand and he hurled it, saying to himself, "I'll pin David to the __WALL__." But David eluded him twice. Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with David but had left Saul.

The word translated "prophesying" is from the Hebrew word "naba" meaning to pour forth or abundantly utter.

1 Samuel 19:9f But an evil spirit from the Lord came upon Saul as he was sitting in his house with his __SPEAR__ in his hand. While David was playing the harp, Saul tried to pin him to the wall with his spear, but David __ELUDED__ him as Saul drove the spear into the wall. That night David made good his escape.

1 Samuel 19:18ff When David had fled and made his __ESCAPE__, he went to Samuel....so he [King Saul] sent men to capture him. But when they saw a group of prophets __PROPHESYING__, with Samuel standing there as their leader, the Spirit of God came upon Saul's __MEN__ and they also prophesied. Saul was told about it, and he sent more men, and they prophesied too. Saul sent men a third time and they also prophesied.

1 Samuel 19:23-24 So Saul went....But the Spirit of God came even upon him, and he __WALKED__ along prophesying....He __STRIPPED__ off his robes and also prophesied in Samuel's presence. He __LAY__ that way all that day and night. This is why people say, "Is Saul also among the prophets?"

2 Samuel 23:1f (Pg. 319) These are the last words of __DAVID__: "The __ORACLE__ of David....The Spirit of the Lord __SPOKE__ through me; his word was on my tongue."

1 Kings 18:12 (Pg. 346) "I don't know where the Spirit of the Lord may __CARRY__ you [Elijah] when I leave you."

2 Kings 2:9f "Let me inherit a double __PORTION__ of your spirit," Elisha replied. "You have asked a __DIFFICULT__ thing," Elijah said, "yet if you __SEE__ me when I am taken from you, it will be yours -otherwise not." As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of __FIRE__ and horses of __FIRE__ appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to __HEAVEN__ in a whirlwind.

2 Kings 2:15 The company of the prophets from Jericho, who were watching [Elisha separated river], said, "The spirit of Elijah is __RESTING__ on Elisha."

NOTE: The Spirit of God will "rest" on someone else in the New Testament - Jesus.

2 Kings 2:16 "Look," they said, "we your servants have fifty able men. Let them go and __LOOK__ for your master. Perhaps the Spirit of the Lord has __PICKED__ him up and set him __DOWN__ on some mountain or in some valley."

NOTE: The Spirit will indeed do that with Philip in the New Testament.

1 Chronicles 12:14,18 (Pg. 403) These Gadites were army commanders; the least was a match for a __HUNDRED__, and the greatest for a __THOUSAND__....Then the Spirit came upon Amasai, chief of the Thirty, and he said: "We are yours, O David!"

1 Chronicles 28:11f Then David gave his son Solomon the __PLANS__ for the portico of the __TEMPLE__, its buildings, its storerooms, its upper parts, its inner rooms and the place of atonement. He gave him the plans of all that the Spirit had put in his __MIND__.

2 Chronicles 15:1ff The Spirit of God came upon Azariah son of Obed. He went out to meet [King] Asa and said to him, "Listen to me....The Lord is with you when you are with him. If you __SEEK__ him, he will be __FOUND__ by you, but if you __FORSAKE__ him, he will forsake you."

2 Chronicles 20:14f Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jaha-ziel...a Levite....He said: "Listen, King Jehosh-aphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the Lord __SAYS__ to you: 'Do not be __AFRAID__ or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God's.'"

2 Chronicles 24:20f Then the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah son of Jehoida the priest. He stood before the people and said, "This is what God says: 'Why do you __DISOBEY__ the Lord's __COMMANDS__? You will not prosper. Because you have __FORSAKEN__ the Lord, he has __FORSAKEN__ you.'" But they plotted against him, and by order of the king they stoned him to __DEATH__ in the courtyard of the Lord's __TEMPLE__.

Nehemiah 9:19ff (Pg. 477) "Because of your [God's] great __COMPASSION__ you did not __ABANDON__ them [first JEWS] in the desert. By day the pillar of cloud did not cease to __GUIDE__ them on their path, nor the pillar of fire by night to shine on the __WAY__ they were to take. You gave your __GOOD__ Spirit to __INSTRUCT__ them. You did not withhold your manna from their mouths, and you gave them water for their thirst. For __FORTY__ years you __SUSTAINED__ them in the desert; they lacked nothing, their clothes did __NOT__ wear out nor did their feet become swollen.

Nehemiah 9:30 For many __YEARS__ [centuries actually] you were patient with them. By your Spirit you __ADMONISHED__ them through your prophets. Yet they paid no attention, so you handed them over to the neighboring peoples [exiled].

Job 26:13 (Pg. 512) By his [God's] breath [Spirit] the __SKIES__ became fair; his hand pierced the gliding serpent.

Job 27:3 As long as I have __LIFE__ within me, the breath [Spirit] of [from] God in my __NOSTRILS__.

Job 32:7f I thought, 'Age should speak; advanced __YEARS__ should teach wisdom. But it is the Spirit in a man, the __BREATH__ of the Almighty, that gives him __UNDERSTANDING__.

Job 33:4 The Spirit of God has __MADE__ me; the breath of the Almighty gives me __LIFE__.

Job 34:14f If it were his intention and he __WITHDREW__ his spirit and breath, all mankind would __PERISH__ together and man would return to the dust.

Psalm 51:10-17 (Pg. 556) Create in me a pure heart, O God, and __RENEW__ a steadfast spirit within me. do not cast me from your __PRESENCE__ or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your slavation and grant me a __WILLING__ spirit to sustain me....The sacrifices of God are a __BROKEN__ spirit; a broken and __CONTRITE__ heart, O God, you will not despise.

Psalm 104:30 When you send your Spirit, they are __CREATED__, and you __RENEW__ the face of the __EARTH__.

Psalm 106:33 For they [early Jews] __REBELLED__ against the Spirit of God, and rash words came from Moses' lips.

Psalm 139:7 Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I __FLEE__ from your __PRESENCE__.

NOTE: Wherever God's Spirit is, there God is.

Psalm 143:4, 7, 10 So my spirit grows faint within me; my heart within me is __DISMAYED__....Answer me quickly, O Lord; my spirit __FAILS__. Do not hide your face from me or I will be like those who go down to the pit [die]....__TEACH__ me to do __YOUR__ __WILL__, for you are my God; may your good Spirit __LEAD__ me on level ground.

Proverbs 1:20, 23 Wisdom call aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the public squares....If you had __RESPONDED__ to my rebuke, I would have __POURED__ out my heart [Spirit] to you and made my __THOUGHTS__ known to you.

Ecclesiastes 12:7 (Pg. 655) The dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit __RETURNS__ to God who __GAVE__ it.

Isaiah 4:4 (Pg. 666) The Lord will __WASH__ away the filth of the women of Zion; he will __CLEANSE__ the bloodstains from Jerusalem by a [the] Spirit of __JUDGEMENT__ and a [the] Spirit of __FIRE__.

NOTE: Numerous other scriptures talk about our being refined by fire to get rid of the bad in our lives and keep only what is good and does not burn.

Isaiah 11:1f A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of the Lord will __rest__ on him - the Spirit of __WISDOM__ and of __UNDERSTANDING__, the Spirit of __COUNSEL__ and of __POWER__, the Spirit of __KNOWLEDGE__ and of the __FEAR__ of the Lord.

NOTES: Some translations call "stump" the root. King David was the son of Jessee. Notice that Branch is capitalized, indicating divinity. Notice the duplication of gifts of the H.S. that the apostles gave in their time. Notice also "counsel" because Jesus called the Holy Spirit the Counselor.

Isaiah 28:6 He will be a spirit of __JUSTICE__ to him who sits in judgment, and source of __STRENGTH__ to those who turn back the battle at the gate.

Isaiah 30:1 Woe to the __OBSTINATE__ children," declares the Lord, "to those who carry out plans that are __NOT__ mine, forming an __ALLIANCE__, but not by my Spirit, heaping __SIN__ upon __SIN__.

Isaiah 32:15f ...till the Spirit is __POURED__ upon us from on high, and the __DESERT__ becomes a fertile field, and the fertile field seems like a forest. __JUSTICE__ will dwell in the desert and __RIGHTEOUSNESS__ live in the fertile field.

Isaiah 34:16 Look in the scroll of the Lord and read: None of these will be __MISSING__, not one will lack her mate. For it is his __MOUTH__ that has given the order, and his __SPIRIT__ will gather them together.

Isaiah 40:7f The grass withers and the flowers __FALL__, because the __BREATH__ [Spirit] of the Lord blows on them. surely the people are grass. The grass __WITHERS__ and the flowers fall, but the __WORD__ of our God stands forever.

Isaiah 40:13f Who has understood the __MIND__ [Spirit] of the Lord, or __INSTRUCTED__ him as his counselor? Whom did the Lord consult to __ENLIGHTEN__ him, and who __TAUGHT__ him the right way? Who was it that taught him __KNOWLEDGE__ or showed him the path of __UNDERSTANDING__?

Isaiah 42:1 Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my __CHOSEN__ one in whom I delight; I will put __MY__ Spirit on him and he will bring __JUSTICE__ to the nations.

Isaiah 42:5 This is what God the Lord says -- he who __CREATED__ the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and all that comes __OUT__ of it, who gives __BREATH__ [spirit] to its people, and life to those who walk on it.

Isaiah 44:3 For I will __POUR__ water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessings on your descendants.

Isaiah 48:16 Come near me and listen to this: From the first announcement I [Isaiah] have not spoken in __SECRET__; at the time it happens, I am there. And now the Sovereign Lord has sent me with his Spirit.

Isaiah 59:19f From the west, men will __FEAR__ the name of the Lord, and from the rising of the sun, they will __REVERE__ his glory. For he will come like a __PENT-UP__ flood that the breath [Spirit] of the Lord drives along. The __REDEEMER__ will come to Zion, to those in Jacob who __REPETNT__ of their sins, declares the Lord.

Isaiah 59:21 "As for me, this is my covenant with them," says the Lord. "My Spirit who is ohn you, and my __WORDS__ that I have put in your mouth will not depart from your mouth, or from the mouths of your children, or from the mouths of their descendants from this time on and __FOREVER__," says the Lord.

Isaiah 61:1 The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has __ANOINTED__ me to __PREACH__ the good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the __BROKENHEARTED__, to proclaim __FREEDOM__ for the captives and release from __DARKNESS__ for the prisoners [blind].

Isaiah 63:10 Yet they rebelled and __GRIEVED__ his Holy Spirit. So he __TURNED__ and became their enemy and he himself fought against them.

Isaiah 63:11-14 Then his people recalled the days of old, the days of Moses and his people -- where is he who brought them through the sea, with the __SHEPHERD__ of his flock? Where is he who set his Holy Spirit __AMONG__ them, who set his glorious arm of __POWER__ to be at Moses' right hand, who __DIVIDED__ the waters before them, to gain for himself __EVERLASTING__ renown, who led them through the depths? ....they were given __REST__ by the Spirit of the Lord. This how you guided your people to make for yourself a glorious __NAME__.

Ezekiel 2:2f (Pg. 804) As he spoke, the Spirit came into me and __RAISED__ me to my feet, and I heard him speaking to me. He said: "Son of man, I am __SENDING__ you to the Israelites, to a rebellious nation."

Ezekiel 3:12 The the Spirit __LIFTED__ me up, and I heard behind me a loud __RUMBLING__ sound - May the __GLORY__ of the Lord be praised in his __DWELLING__ place! - the sound of the wings of the living creatures brushing against each other....

Ezekiel 3:14f The Spirit then __LIFTED__ me up and __TOOK__ me away, and I went in bitterness and in the anger of my spirit, with the __STRONG__ hand of the Lord upon me. I came to the exiles who lived at Tel Abib.

Ezekiel 3:24f Then the Spirit came __INTO__ me and __RAISED__ me to my feet. He spoke to me and said: "Go, shut yourself inside your house....I will make your tongue __STICK__ to the roof of your mouth....But when I speak to you, I will open your __MOUTH__.

Ezekiel 8:2f I looked, and I saw a __FIGURE__ like that of a man. From what appeared to be his waist down he was like __FIRE__, and from there up his appearance was as bright as __GLOWING__ metal. He stretched out what looked like a __HAND__ and took me by the hair of my head. The Spirit lifted me up between earth and heaven and in __VISIONS__ of God he took me to Jerusalem, to the entrance to the north gate of the inner court, where the __IDOL__ that provokes to jealousy stood.

Ezekiel 11:1f Then the Spirit lifted me up and __BROUGHT__ me to the gate of the house of the Lord that faces east....these are the men who are plotting evil and giving wicked advice to this city."

Ezekiel 11:5 Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon me, and __HE__ told me to __SAY__: "This is what the Lord says: That is what you are saying, o house of Israel, but I __KNOW__ what is going through your __MIND__.

Ezekiel 11:19f I will give them an undivided __HEART__ and put a __NEW__ spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of __STONE__ and give them a heart of __FLESH__. Then they will follow my __DECREES__ and be careful to keep my laws. They will be my people, and I will be their God.

Ezekiel 11:24 The Spirit __LIFTED__ me up and brought me [back home] to the exiles in __BABYLONIA__ in the __VISION__ given by the Spirit of God.

Ezekiel 18:31 Rid yourselves of all the __OFFENSES__ you have committed, and get a __NEW__ heart and a __NEW__ spirit. Why will you __DIE__, O house of Israel?

Ezekiel 36:26f I will give you a __NEW__ heart and put a __NEW__ spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of __STONE__ and give you a heart of __FLESH__. And I will put __MY__ Spirit in you and move you to __FOLLOW__ my decrees and be careful to __KEEP__ my laws.

Ezekiel 37:1 The hand of the Lord was upon me, and he __BROUGHT__ me out by the Spirit of the Lord and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones.

Ezekiel 37:14 I will put my Spirit in you and you will __LIVE__, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I the Lord have __SPOKEN__, and I have __DONE__ it, declares the Lord.

Ezekiel 39:29 I will no longer hide my face from them, for I will __POUR__ out my Spirit on the house of Israel, declares the Sovereign Lord.

Ezekiel 43:5 Then the Spirit __LIFTED__ me and brought me into the inner court, and the glory of the Lord filled the __TEMPLE__.

Hosea 9:7 (Pg. 877) The days of __PUNISHMENT__ are coming, the days of reckoning are at hand. Let Israel know this. Because your __SINS__ are so many and your hostility so great, the __PROPHET__ is considered a fool, the inspired [spiritual] man a maniac.

Joel 2:28f (Pg. 883) And afterward, I will __POUR__ out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will __PROPHESY__, your old men will dream __DREAMS__, and your young men will see __VISIONS__. Even on my servants, both men and __WOMEN__, I will pour out my Spirit in those days.

Micah 2:7 (Pg. 900) Should it be said, O house of Jacob: "Is the Spirit of the Lord __ANGRY?" Does he do such things?" "Do not my __WORDS__ do good to him whose ways are upright?"

Micah 3:8 But as for me, I am filled with __POWER__, with the Spirit of the Lord, and with __JUSTICE__ and might to __DECLARE__ to Jacob his transgression, to Israel his __SIN__.

Haggai 1:14 (Pg. 917) So the Lord __STIRRED__ up the spirit of...the governor of Judah, and the spirit of...the high priest, and the spirit of the whole remnant of the people. They came and began to __WORK__ on the house of the Lord Almighty, their God.

Haggai 2:5ff This is what I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt. And my Spirit __REMAINS__ among you. Do not fear....the desired of all nations will come, and I will fill this __HOUSE__ with glory, says the Lord Almighty.

Zechariah 4:6 (Pg. 920) So he said to me, "This is the __WORD__ of the Lord to Zerubbabel: 'Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the Lord Almighty.

NOTE: This was in reference to the small remnant of Jews actually able to rebuild the huge temple.

Zechariah 6:5, 8 The angel answered me, "These are the __FOUR__ spirits of heaven, going out from standing in the __PRESENCE__ of the Lord of the whole world....Then he called to me, "Look, those going toward the north country have given my Spirit __REST__ in the land of the north.

Zechariah 7:12 They made their hearts as __HARD__ as flint and would not listen to the law or to the __WORDS__ that the Lord Almighty had sent by his Spirit through the earlier __PROPHETS__. So the Lord Almighty was very angry.

Zechariah 12:10 And I will __POUR__ out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of __GRACE__ and __SUPPLICATION__. They will __LOOK__ on me, the one they have __PIERCED__, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn __SON__.
